How to Choose Outfits That Coordinate for Your Family Session

May 23, 2024

One of the questions I get most often before a session is: what should we wear? Outfit coordination can feel overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. The goal is not to match — it's to complement. Here's how to nail it every time. Start with one person. Pick the outfit you're most excited about for one family member — usually mom or the child with the most options — and build everyone else around that. Pull colors from that outfit rather than duplicating them exactly. Stick to a palette of two to four colors. Choose tones that feel cohesive together: think warm neutrals, soft blues and creams, or earthy greens and tans. Avoid neon colors, busy logos, and large graphics — these distract from faces and date quickly in photos. Mix textures and patterns at different scales. A subtle floral on one person pairs beautifully with a solid on another. One stripe or plaid can work if everything else is solid. Dress for the season and setting. Flowy dresses and linens work beautifully for golden hour outdoor sessions. Cozy layers and knits feel perfect for fall. Think about how you want to feel in the photos, not just how you want to look. Finally, comfort matters — especially for little ones. If your toddler is miserable in their outfit, it will show. When in doubt, send me a few options before the session and I'm always happy to help you choose.

What Is a Cake Smash Session — And Why You Should Book One

May 23, 2024

A cake smash session is exactly what it sounds like — your baby gets a cake, and they do whatever comes naturally. Dig in with both hands, smear it across their face, toss it on the floor — all of it is fair game, and all of it makes for the most joyful, expressive photos you'll ever own. Typically held around your baby's first birthday, a cake smash session celebrates the end of that incredible first year of life. It's a chance to let your little one be completely free — no rules, no sitting still — just pure, messy, unfiltered joy captured on camera. At Lifestyle Photography by Tiffany, the cake is included with every cake smash session, so there's nothing for you to coordinate. We'll talk through colors and themes beforehand so everything ties together beautifully. Why should you book one? Because one-year-olds are only one once. Because the photos will make you laugh every time you look at them. Because grandparents absolutely love them. And because there is nothing in the world quite like watching your baby experience cake for the very first time — with someone there to capture every second of it.

What Is a Milestone Session — And When Should You Book One?

May 23, 2024

Your baby's first year is a whirlwind of change. One month they're a sleepy newborn, and before you know it they're sitting up, crawling, pulling themselves to standing, and blowing out their first birthday candle. A milestone session is a dedicated photography session designed to capture these major developmental moments before they pass. Common milestones include the sitter session around six to eight months — when baby can sit independently and their personality is really starting to shine — and the cake smash or first birthday session at twelve months. But milestones don't stop there. First steps, first day of school, losing a first tooth — any moment that marks a meaningful chapter in your child's growth is worth preserving. At Lifestyle Photography by Tiffany, milestone sessions are relaxed and baby-paced. We let your little one explore, play, and just be themselves while I capture the magic as it unfolds. These sessions make the perfect gift for grandparents, and the images become some of the most treasured a family owns. If you're wondering when to book, the answer is always sooner than you think — babies change fast.

What Is a Baby-Led Newborn Session?

May 23, 2024

If you've been researching newborn photography, you've likely come across two styles: posed and baby-led. At Lifestyle Photography by Tiffany, I exclusively offer baby-led newborn sessions — and here's why. A traditional posed newborn session involves carefully positioning your baby into curled, wrapped, or propped poses, often using beanbags and props. They require a lot of handling and can take three to five hours. A baby-led session is different. Instead of working against your newborn's natural instincts, we follow their lead entirely. If baby wants to stretch, we let them stretch. If they're hungry, we pause and feed. If they fall into a deep sleep, that's when we gently capture them at their most peaceful. The result is imagery that feels natural, calm, and true to those early days — not manufactured. Sessions typically last up to an hour, which is much gentler on both baby and parents. There's no rushing, no forcing positions, and no stress. Just your brand new baby, exactly as they are. These fleeting first days go so fast. A baby-led session is my way of honoring that.

What Is a Mini Session — And Is It Right for You?

May 23, 2024

Mini sessions are one of the most popular offerings I get asked about — and for good reason. But they aren't the right fit for everyone, so let's break it down. A mini session is a short, themed photography session typically lasting 15 to 20 minutes. You'll receive a curated set of images — usually around 8 — delivered through an online gallery. They're offered seasonally, which means availability is limited and they book fast. So who are mini sessions perfect for? Families who want beautiful, updated photos without the time commitment of a full session. Parents looking for holiday cards or a quick milestone snap. Anyone on a tighter budget who still wants professional quality images. Mini sessions are not the best fit if you want a relaxed, unhurried experience with lots of outfit changes, multiple locations, or a large extended family. For those situations, a full session gives us the time and flexibility to tell your whole story. Not sure which is right for you? Send me a message and we'll figure it out together.

What Is a Lifestyle Photographer — And How Are They Different?

May 23, 2024

You've probably seen the term "lifestyle photographer" floating around, but what does it actually mean? Unlike traditional photographers who pose subjects in a studio, a lifestyle photographer captures real, unscripted moments as they naturally unfold. Think of a mom laughing as her toddler runs toward her, or a family curled up together on a blanket at golden hour — not stiff, say-cheese poses, but genuine emotion and connection. Studio photographers excel at controlled lighting and formal portraits. Photojournalists document events objectively. But a lifestyle photographer sits somewhere beautifully in between: intentionally creating an environment where authentic moments can happen, then capturing them as they do. At Lifestyle Photography by Tiffany, every session is guided — not directed. I'll suggest a walk, a tickle fight, a quiet cuddle — and then I step back and let your family be yourselves. The result is imagery that actually looks like you.

Children's Milestone Photography

May 29, 2023

Milestone photography captures the precious stages of your child's growth. From their first smile to their first steps, these fleeting moments deserve to be preserved in beautiful, timeless images that you'll look back on for years to come. But milestone sessions are about so much more than marking a date on the calendar — they're about freezing a version of your child that will never exist again. The way they grip your finger at three months. The wobbly, triumphant grin the week they learn to stand. The serious little face they make when they're concentrating hard on something only they understand. Those details fade from memory faster than any parent expects. The most popular milestones I photograph here in Spring Lake are the sitter session (around six to eight months, once baby can sit up on their own), the first birthday, and the back-to-school season. But there's no wrong time — first haircuts, potty-training graduations, the start of kindergarten, even a beloved lovey or favorite pair of rain boots can anchor a session that you'll treasure. My milestone sessions are relaxed and child-led. We don't force poses or chase the perfect smile. Instead, we follow your little one's lead, play, and let their real personality come through, because that's what you'll actually want to remember. I keep sessions short and low-pressure so they stay fun for everyone — overtired, overwhelmed kids rarely make for happy photos, and the goal is joy, not perfection. Sessions can happen outdoors at one of our beautiful local spots or in the comfort of your own home, whichever suits your child best. They also make a wonderful gift for grandparents, who often treasure these images even more than the parents do. If you're wondering when to book, my honest answer is always sooner than you think. Children change in the blink of an eye, and the milestone you're tempted to wait on is usually the one that passes the fastest.

Photographer: Behind-the-Scenes
Behind the Scenes

Photographer: Behind-the-Scenes

January 30, 2023

Ever wondered what goes on behind the camera during a photo session? From setting up the perfect lighting to coaxing genuine smiles, here's a peek into my process and what makes each session uniquely special. Long before we ever meet, your session has already started. When you book, I send over a short questionnaire so I can learn about your family — your kids' names and ages, what makes them laugh, any sensitivities or nap schedules I should plan around, and what you hope to do with your images afterward. That information shapes everything: the location I suggest, the time of day we shoot, and how I'll approach your particular crew. On session day, my number one job is honestly not the camera — it's connection. Kids can sense when an adult is tense or rushing, so I move slowly, get down on their level, and treat the whole thing like play. We might go on a 'bug hunt,' have a tickle fight, race to a tree and back, or share a secret. Those games are where the real magic happens: the belly laughs, the snuggles, the unguarded glances between you and your child that you can't fake or pose. I'm chasing the in-between moments more than the say-cheese ones. I shoot during golden hour whenever possible — that soft, warm light about an hour before sunset that makes everyone glow. After our session, the work continues at my desk. I carefully cull hundreds of frames down to the very best, then hand-edit each image for color, tone, and that timeless, true-to-life look I'm known for. Within a couple of weeks, your gallery arrives — ready to download, print, and share. What makes each session special isn't a fancy studio or expensive props. It's the fact that no two families are alike, and my goal is always to capture yours exactly as you are, in this fleeting season of life.

Is Hiring a Professional Photographer Worth It?
Advice

Is Hiring a Professional Photographer Worth It?

January 16, 2023

In an age of smartphone cameras, you might wonder if hiring a professional photographer is worth the investment. The short answer: absolutely. Here's why professional photography creates value that lasts a lifetime. Yes, the phone in your pocket takes impressive photos — for everyday snapshots, it's wonderful. But there's a real difference between a quick picture and a portrait you'll frame, gift, and pass down. Part of it is technical: professional cameras and lenses capture detail, depth, and low-light beauty (like true golden-hour glow) that phones simply can't match, and they produce files large enough to print big and sharp on canvas or in an album. Part of it is skill — knowing how to use light, angle, and timing so everyone looks their best and the moment feels real rather than staged. But honestly, the biggest value isn't the gear at all. It's that you get to be IN the photos. So many parents, especially moms, spend years behind the camera and end up nearly invisible in their own family's history. When you hire a photographer, you finally get to be present — holding your baby, laughing with your partner, fully in the frame instead of always documenting from outside it. There's also the experience itself. A professional knows how to make wiggly toddlers laugh, calm a fussy newborn, and turn what could be a stressful afternoon into something genuinely fun. You're not refereeing and shooting at the same time; you get to just enjoy your family while I handle the rest. And then there's permanence. Trends, phones, and apps come and go, but a beautifully made, professionally edited image holds up for decades. These are the photographs your children will hold one day to remember exactly what childhood felt like. When you weigh the cost against a lifetime of looking back, professional photography isn't an expense — it's one of the most lasting investments you can make in your family's story.

How to Prepare for a Photoshoot
Tips

How to Prepare for a Photoshoot

January 2, 2023

A little preparation goes a long way in ensuring your photo session is stress-free and produces stunning results. From outfit coordination to timing your session right, here are my top tips. First, plan your outfits a few days ahead — never the morning of. Lay everything out, try it on the kids, and make sure shoes, bows, and socks are all accounted for. Stick to a coordinated color palette of soft, complementary tones rather than matchy-matchy outfits or bold logos and characters that pull attention away from faces. (I have a whole guide on what to wear if you'd like more detail.) Second, time it around your kids, not the clock. For little ones, the best sessions happen after a good nap and a snack, when everyone is rested and happy. I shoot at golden hour — the hour before sunset — because the light is gorgeous, so we'll usually aim for early evening. If you have a baby, keep their schedule as normal as possible that day and don't be afraid to feed right before we start. Third, come with a relaxed mindset. Kids absolutely mirror their parents' energy. If you're stressed about getting 'the perfect shot,' they'll feel it. The sessions that produce the most magical images are the ones where parents let go, play, and trust me to capture the real moments — even the silly, messy, in-between ones. Bring a few small things that help: a favorite snack (nothing too messy or colorful), a beloved toy or lovey for comfort, a change of clothes for inevitable spills, and lots of patience. For newborns, a feed-and-cuddle plan goes a long way. Finally, don't sweat the meltdowns. Almost every session with young children has a wobble or two, and that's completely normal — I build in time for it and often those reset moments lead to the best snuggles on camera. Come prepared, stay flexible, and let's have fun. That combination is what creates images you'll love for years.

Sunflower Field Mini Session

Sunflower Field Mini Session

July 17, 2022

There's something magical about golden hour in a sunflower field. Our summer mini sessions captured families surrounded by towering blooms, creating dreamy, sun-drenched portraits that embody the warmth of the season. If you've never done a sunflower session, picture this: rows of bright yellow blooms standing taller than your toddler, soft evening light filtering through the petals, and your family wandering through it all while I quietly capture the wonder on your kids' faces. These themed mini sessions are a summer favorite here in the Spring Lake and Fayetteville area, and for good reason — the setting does half the work, and the joy is completely real. Mini sessions are short and sweet: about 15 to 20 minutes, with a curated set of beautifully edited images delivered in an online gallery. They're perfect for families who want gorgeous seasonal photos without the time commitment of a full session, and they tend to book up fast because the sunflowers are only at their peak for a short window each year. A few tips if you join the next round: dress in soft, earthy tones or gentle pastels that complement (rather than compete with) all that yellow — think cream, sage, dusty blue, and warm neutrals. Flowy dresses and linen look especially beautiful with the breeze and the blooms. Time your little ones' naps so they arrive happy, and come ready to let them explore; some of my favorite frames are kids on tiptoe trying to peek over the flowers or reaching up to touch a petal. Sunflower minis are also wonderful for maternity announcements, milestone photos, and simple updated family portraits for the year. Keep an eye on my booking calendar and social media in mid-to-late summer — when the field is ready, I announce dates and they fill quickly. I'd love to capture your family among the blooms next season.

4th of July Mini Session

4th of July Mini Session

July 4, 2022

Red, white, and blue never looked so adorable! Our patriotic mini sessions were a hit, with little ones dressed in their finest Americana outfits. These festive photos are perfect for celebrating the spirit of independence. Living in the Spring Lake and Fort Liberty community, the Fourth of July carries extra meaning for so many of the families I work with — military families especially. That's part of why these patriotic minis are some of my favorite sessions of the year. There's something so sweet about a toddler in a star-spangled romper clutching a tiny flag, or siblings giggling together with sparklers and bubbles in the golden evening light. Patriotic mini sessions are short, themed sessions — around 15 to 20 minutes — with a styled setup ready to go, so all you have to do is show up and let your kids be kids. They're a wonderful way to mark the season, refresh your family photos, and create keepsakes that feel both festive and timeless. If you're planning outfits, you don't need head-to-toe stars and stripes; in fact, a little restraint photographs better. Try one pop of red, white, or blue per person against soft neutrals — a denim dress with a red bow, a simple white tee with chambray, cream and navy with a single flag accent. Vintage-inspired Americana (think classic stripes and gingham) always looks charming and never dates. Time it around naps so everyone arrives cheerful, and come ready for a relaxed, playful few minutes rather than stiff posing. These sessions are popular and the spots are limited, so they book early each summer. Whether you're celebrating a homecoming, a deployment send-off, or simply your family's love of summer, I'd be honored to capture it. Watch for date announcements in June, and grab your spot before they're gone — these little firecrackers go quickly!

What to Wear to a Photoshoot
Tips

What to Wear to a Photoshoot

May 21, 2022

Choosing the right outfits can make or break your photos. I always recommend coordinating rather than matching, sticking to a cohesive color palette, and choosing timeless pieces over trendy ones. The single best piece of advice I can give is this: complement, don't match. Matching outfits (everyone in white shirts and jeans) can feel dated and flat, while thoughtfully coordinated outfits add depth and interest. Start by choosing one person's outfit you love — often mom's, or the child with the most options — and build everyone else's look around it, pulling colors from that piece rather than copying it exactly. Aim for a palette of two to four cohesive tones. Warm neutrals, soft blues and creams, earthy greens, and muted dusty shades all photograph beautifully and stay timeless. Avoid neon colors, large logos, and busy character prints — they pull the eye away from faces and tend to look dated quickly. Mixing textures and patterns at different scales is where outfits really come alive: pair a subtle floral with a solid, or let one person wear a gentle stripe or plaid while everyone else stays simple. Dress for the season and the setting, too. Flowy dresses, linens, and soft layers are perfect for golden-hour sessions in our warmer North Carolina months, while cozy knits and richer tones suit fall and the cooler season beautifully. Don't forget the details — coordinated shoes, simple accessories, and tamed hair all show up in photos. Above all, prioritize comfort, especially for little ones. If your toddler is itchy, too hot, or fussing with a stiff collar, it will absolutely show on their face, and no outfit is worth a meltdown. Lay everything out the night before so the morning isn't a scramble. And if you're ever stuck, send me a few options before your session — I'm always happy to help you choose. The right outfits won't just look good; they'll help your family feel relaxed and confident, and that always makes for better photos.
